53Biologics Invests Over €2M in Lyophilization Expansion

European contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) 53Biologics has announced a more than €2 million ($2.25 million) investment in new lyophilization infrastructure at its Boecillo, Spain facility, expanding its capabilities for the manufacturing and stabilization of next-generation biologic therapies.

The investment includes installation of a 1.8 m² Telstar Lyomonic 2 ST lyophilizer at the company’s cGMP site, enabling 53Biologics to bring freeze-drying operations in-house and increase fill-finish capacity by up to 10,000 2R vials per batch. The new capability addresses growing demand for technologies that can preserve the stability and shelf life of increasingly complex biologic medicines.

The new equipment has already been used to produce preclinical batches, with 53Biologics expecting the service to be fully operational for cGMP manufacturing by early 2027.

“Adding lyophilisation to our in-house fill & finish capabilities is an important step in the evolution of 53Biologics’ service offering,” said CEO Pablo Gutiérrez. He added that the investment strengthens the company’s ability to meet evolving clinical and regulatory requirements while allowing customers to access a wider range of manufacturing services through a single partner.

The expansion follows several years of investment in the company’s fill-finish operations, including the addition of a Grade A isolator, closed-system filling technologies, semi-automated filling and crimping systems, labeling capabilities, secondary packaging, and supporting analytical laboratories.

53Biologics positions the new lyophilization capability as part of its broader “one-stop-shop” strategy for pharmaceutical and biotech customers. Alongside its in-house services, the company also leverages a network of specialized partners to provide access to additional fill-finish technologies when required.

With the latest expansion, 53Biologics further strengthens its support for plasmid DNA, recombinant proteins, and other advanced biologic products across clinical development and manufacturing stages.
